I have a confession: Digital photography is killing me.
I am torn between appreciation for the format and the incredible boom of people who are beginning to make their way into “professional photography”. I can’t say that I remember what it was like to be a professional photographer, because my experience as a professional before digital was confined to photoshop manipulation & level adjustments for Mylinda Knittel, owner/operator of Spring Street Studios.
Before that, however, I was what I would consider a good photographer. As a teenager I used a camera that was completely manual with exception of a light meter and I had a solid grasp on composition. It was hard to take photographs worthy of people’s wall. Now it seems that anyone can take a good photograph by simply pointing the lens in the right direction, and the camera does the rest.
Honestly, when I think hard about it, I really loath the idea that any Joe off the street can go lay down $500 and have the ability to take photographs for profit, when they don’t even know what “shutter speed”, “aperture”, or ISO mean.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Is it right to feel this way?

i truly apreciate digtal photograpy for the benifits it has offered the profesion, but i trully agree, but i have to agree that for the most part it is killing it.
i like the black and white better…
Brother I’m right there with you, people buy a dang camera, not even out of research or use, but based on what they’ve heard “Oooo I like Canon cause the NFL uses it” (I heard that line all the freaking time”, and take a few decent pics and all the sudden they’re pros and coming up to me at weddings sayoing what are you shooting with? Oooo yeah bit I think mines better then that. (As they hold up some $100 fixed lens sale item from walmart or best buy and now they’re telling me how to take a photo.
People now think that they’re 5 hours of auto focus,image stabilized,Blur protected,photocopied experience trumps my 15 of photography and 10 years of paid gigs. Makes me sad, mad and ready to take away their junk and give them the old mamiya 35mm I learned with and say “My friend, come back to me 100 rolls of film & 2 years from now, then we’ll talk.”
